Canadian Operations

Field Aviation designs, modifies and certifies aircraft for specialized roles across the globe. Our expertise is the missionization of commercial platforms for search and rescue, intelligence, surveillance and interdiction roles for both government and civilian customers.

We also develop system specific STCs for many different aircraft. Our capabilities include build-to-print parts manufacturing for aircraft OEMs and our own modifications. We are also a factory authorized repair, overhaul and sales center for many avionics equipment manufacturers.

Field Aviation is pleased to announce the arrival at its facilities of the first Bombardier Dash 8 aircraft for the flight deck modernization program. The launch customer is the Icelandic Coast Guard (ICG) with their Dash 8 Q300 Maritime Surveillance aircraft which was originally modified and delivered to the ICG by Field Aviation in 2009.

This flight deck upgrade has been specifically designed by Field Aviation for the "classic" Dash 8 100/200/300 series aircraft. It features five identical Universal Avionics EFI-890R, high definition LCD flat panel displays of which four primarily present the pilots with Navigation information and the fifth (centre display) presents the engine information. The system provides full redundancy by allowing information to be switched between the five displays, as well as a modular upgrade path for features such as Synthetic Vision, Charts, Checklists, Electronic Documents and Satellite Weather display.   

Field Aviation's Dash 8 flight deck upgrade was developed in close cooperation with Universal Avionics, who was responsible for tailoring and certifying the unique display and interface software for the Dash 8 aircraft, and with Ametek, who developed the Dash 8's dual system Engine Interface Unit. 

There are many advantages to the operators of "classic" Dash 8 Series 100/200/300 aircraft converting to the Universal EFI-890R flight deck display - says David Jensen, Field Aviation's Vice President Business Development. "First and foremost there is a significant improvement in situational awareness for the flight crew, and a much easier flight crew transition from - and into other aircraft types which these days tend to have more modern flight decks than the "classic" Dash 8s."

"Field Aviation's flight deck upgrade removes - depending on the configuration of the "old" aircraft - between 30 and 40 instruments and indicators and replaces these with five displays plus one separate stand-by indicator. This results in a drastic reduction in equipment failures which leads to improved dispatch reliability and reduced maintenance costs." 

"The first Dash 8s entered commercial service in the mid 80s, but the display technology has remained static until now, "continues Jensen. "The aircraft remains very popular and the fleet is good for many, many more years in service.  We believe that many operators will implement this flight deck upgrade as part of extending the useful life of the Dash 8 aircraft - whether their primary reason is safety, reliability or maintainability or a combination of all."

The Dash 8 flight deck upgrade is offered as complete prefabricated retrofit integration kits or as turn-key modifications at Field's main facilities at Toronto's Pearson airport.
